Documenting the Future: My Experience Photographing the German Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka

As a photographer based in Osaka, I’ve always been aware that the 2025 Osaka Expo was on the horizon, but to be completely honest, I hadn’t given much thought to attending. I assumed it was a spectacle for tourists and wasn’t sure how relevant it would be to my daily life. However, that all changed when I was given the opportunity to photograph the construction of the German Pavilion ahead of the Expo.

Experiencing the Construction Process

Seeing the construction site up close was an entirely different experience. It’s not just about a few buildings going up—it’s the scale of the whole project that’s breathtaking. The two-kilometer wooden fence surrounding the entire site is truly impressive. This structure not only adds to the aesthetic but also provides visitors with an elevated walkway offering panoramic views of Osaka and the distant Akashi Strait.

The German Pavilion, which I was specifically tasked with documenting, is a magnificent example of sustainable architecture and engineering. I captured everything from the large wooden structures to the cranes towering overhead. Walking through the site gave me a sense of the meticulous planning that has gone into this global event. I left with one thought in mind: There’s no way I’m missing this Expo when it opens.

Behind the Lens: The Photography Project

The photography project for the German Pavilion was both exciting and challenging. Over the course of several hours, I captured a wide range of shots, from sweeping overviews to detailed close-ups of the architectural work. The project involved delivering 56 images, including some that were extra, to provide the client with a comprehensive look at the pavilion’s progress. Due to contractual limitations, I can only share the photos that have already been publicly released, but I believe these images still give a great sense of the scale and beauty of the project.

Here are some of the highlights from the shoot:

These images are just a small sample of the 56 photos I delivered to the client, each showcasing the Pavilion’s innovative design. The attention to detail in every wooden beam and construction element is remarkable, and I’m proud to have been able to document such a significant project.

I’ve created a dedicated Portfolio Page to showcase more of the work I’ve done for this project, as well as other architectural photography. You can view additional photos and details there.

A Final Thought for Visitors

Whether you’re a local resident or a foreign visitor planning to be in Osaka during the Expo, I highly recommend taking the time to visit the event. It’s not just a global showcase but a testament to the incredible architectural and cultural efforts that have been poured into making this Expo a reality. Don’t miss out on the chance to experience it firsthand.
