Discovering the Art of Sakai Knife Making

Recently, I had the distinct pleasure of working on a photography project in Sakai, Osaka, which allowed me to capture the intricate art of knife-making. Sakai is known for its highly skilled craftsmen who have mastered the craft of producing top-quality knives, which are highly sought after by professional chefs and culinary enthusiasts worldwide. My journey began when I was contacted by Chef’s Armoury, which sought to create a series of videos and photographs to showcase the expertise of these artisans and the knives they create.

Capturing the Craftsmanship of Kagekiyo Knives

The project focused on the Kagekiyo knife company, a renowned Sakai brand specializing in the creation of the “Gyuto” knife. I had the opportunity to film and photograph the entire knife-making process from start to finish. The craftsmen took great pride in their work, and their dedication to their craft was evident in every carefully executed step. Their attention to detail and precision resulted in the production of exquisite, razor-sharp knives that are both functional and visually stunning.

Client Collaboration and Video Production Process

During the project, I also had the chance to capture some of Sakai’s picturesque surroundings and workshop spaces. The romantic and charming atmosphere of the city provided a beautiful backdrop for the videos and photographs, further highlighting the unique craftsmanship of the artisans. As the project progressed, I collaborated closely with Stephanie and the craftsmen to ensure that the final product accurately represented their work and the rich history of Sakai knife-making.

Success is not final, failure is not fatal: It is the courage to continue that counts.
